Bloomingdale Public Library (BPL) cardholders (ages 12-adult) are welcome to use the Makerspace during Open Use Hours. If you're a Bloomingdale resident who would like to use the Makerspace, you can apply for a library card at the Circulation Desk. Minors 17 years and younger need a parent/guardian present to apply for a library card.

BPL Makerspace Mission
For people interested in DIY, crafting, and making, the BPL Makerspace is a place where you can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. We've designed a space suitable for learning, crafting, and collaborating.

Age Limits
The Makerspace is open to Bloomingdale Public Library cardholders ages 12-adult. Children 11 years and younger are allowed to use the Makerspace when supervised at all times by a BPL cardholder.

Getting Started: Google Maps and GPS Apps

VIRTUAL WEBINAR - The Art of Henri Matisse

Join us as Jeff Mishur hosts a companion program to the ongoing Art Institute of Chicago exhibition Matisse’s Jazz: Rhythms in Color showcasing the later, paper cutouts of the artist Henri Matisse, among other works.

Henri Matisse was one of the greatest artists of the last century. This program examines his career from his association with the Fauves to his work with paper cutouts. The program will explore his fascination with the processes of making art as well as his connections with fellow modernists.

Jeff is co-owner of Art Excursions, Inc, a business offering private guiding, educational programs and small group tours. Jeff has also taught on the university level for many years.

Invite Nature to Your Yard!

Join us as we learn all about creating more eco-friendly yards!

Jim Kleinwachter of The Conservation Foundation will show us how the “typical” yard can easily be improved to help reduce water run-off, increase wildlife habitat, and improve the soil. The benefits of improving the environment are many including, reducing your water use, creating more area for birds and butterflies, reducing chemical use, less lawn mowing, and learning about invasive species that may need to be controlled in your yard.

This education program will cover a variety of techniques for transforming your yard, including the use of rain barrels, rain gardens, and the selection and use of native plants to solve yard problems. Native plants grow naturally and need no watering or fertilizers once established. Additionally, these plants thrive on their own and do well, even during drought conditions. Their deep roots hold the soil, allow water to filter down deep into the ground where it belongs and, because they “evolved” here, they attract dozens of species of beneficial wildlife such as butterflies and songbirds.

Participants will receive complimentary a butterfly attraction & identification pamphlet, a native plant guide, and a rain garden (solving water issue) brochures!

VIRTUAL: Exploring the Constitution & the News: Foundations to Front Pages: What the Constitution Says—and How It’s Being Interpreted Today

As our country celebrates its 250th birthday this year, please join the League of Women Voters for a virtual series that explores the U.S. Constitution through both its historical foundations and its ongoing relevance in today’s headlines every 3rd Thursday evening of the month at 7:00PM . Each session will take a deeper look at how the framers’ debates, amendments, and landmark interpretations continue to shape the issues we see in the news—from voting rights and separation of powers to free speech, federalism, and more.

Designed for adults seeking a clearer understanding of how our government works, this series blends accessible history with thoughtful discussion of current events. Participants will gain practical civic knowledge, learn how constitutional principles apply to modern challenges, and leave better equipped to evaluate news and public policy.

Whether you're a longtime civic learner or just beginning to dig into constitutional questions, The programs will offer an engaging, nonpartisan space to explore how America’s founding document continues to guide— and sometimes complicate—our democracy today.

The programs will be different each month through October, 2026. Each session will be introducing a different topic and conveying them through the lens of the U.S. Constitution. It is not necessary to attend each session as they all "stand alone".

The programs will be presented by Steven D. Schwinn who teaches constitutional law, comparative constitutional law, at UIC Law School. Steve is founding editor-in-chief of the American Constitution Society Supreme Court Review and founding co-editor of the Constitutional Law Prof Blog. He is a longtime member of the American Constitution Society Chicago Lawyers Chapter Board of Advisers.

The men's World Cup of Football is taking place in North America in the summer of 2026. It is the biggest sporting event in the world. From its origins in England to its present global popularity, John Lyons discusses the history of football/soccer through the use of movie clips, photos, and newspaper reports from around the world. He traces the history of the World Cup, examines the reasons behind the slow growth of the game in the United States, and looks at the surge of interest in the women’s sport in recent years. Hosted by Joliet Junior College Professor John F. Lyons.

Join us as we take part in a webinar, sponsored by the Algonquin Area Public Library, for a special virtual presentation exploring the Barack Obama Presidential Library and Obama Presidential Center.

Presenters, Kenvi Phillips, inaugural director of the Barack Obama Presidential Library, and Tina Tchen, Executive Vice President of Programs for the Obama Foundation, will discuss the first digital Presidential Library and the Obama Presidential Center as a vibrant community hub, economic anchor, and beacon of democracy. This program offers a unique opportunity to learn how presidential history is preserved, accessed, and shared, and how these records deepen our understanding of recent history and democratic values.

The Barack Obama Presidential Center is a museum, library, and educational campus dedicated to President Barack Obama's legacy. Located in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side, the Center will feature community gathering spaces, a Chicago Public Library branch, and the Obama Foundation's headquarters. The Center opens in June 2026. The National Archives and Records Administration operates the Barack Obama Presidential Library, the Agency's first fully digital Presidential Library, a partner of the Obama Presidential Center.

The Bee Gees, Disco, & Saturday Night Fever

The Bee Gees, disco music, and Saturday Night Fever all collided in the mid-1970s. The decade prior, The Bee Gees were a Beatlesque pop band, but reinvented themselves and became disco superstars. Disco music had its origins in small, urban dance clubs and absolutely exploded into mainstream America thanks to the film Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta. Using music and video clips, we’ll explore it all - the pop-culture moment that reshaped our nightlife, dancing, fashion and music.

Come join us as we reminisce about the beginnings of disco. College of DuPage professor Gary Wenstrup will talk about the sounds emanating from that year which would culminate the next year in a smash hit movie Saturday Night Fever (1977), known not for just the weightiness of its story, but the disco soundtrack that outlived and outperformed its source movie.

Welcome Leslie Goddard back to BPL with a great dip (pun intended) into American History!

Cookbooks have existed as long as our nation has. Among the thousands of American cookbooks published over the past 250 years, a group of them have not only sold well but also profoundly influenced how we cook and eat. This illustrated talk explores ten notable cookbooks that shaped our shared culinary heritage. From the trailblazing work of Fannie Farmer and Irma Rombauer to the innovative explorations of Julia Child and Craig Claiborne, these cookbooks have become milestone bestsellers. Prepare to immerse yourself in the pages of America's favorite cookbooks and discover what they tell us about American Food culture and eating habits.

Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., is an award-winning historian, author, actress and lecturer who has been presenting on topics in American history and women’s history for twenty years. She holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. from Northwestern University as well as master’s degrees in both museum studies and in theater. A former museum director, she currently works full-time as a public speaker and author. Her presentations have been seen by audiences in more than thirty states, including scores of universities, museums, libraries, festivals, and civic organizations.

This program brought to the library by the DuPage County Animal Services and, if available, they will be bringing a special pet guest.

By sending my child to this program, I understand foreseen and unforeseen events may arise during a hands-on interaction with an animal. Unforeseen events include, but are not limited to: animal bites, scratches, allergic reactions, or contact with pet saliva or other bodily fluids. "Training in Philadelphia in the early 1860s, Cassatt then traveled to Europe largely on her own to study with noted teachers and experience the continent’s traditional and modern art firsthand. In 1877 she made the daring decision to join the French Impressionists—the only American to exhibit with them. It was in the years following the eighth and final Impressionist group show in 1886 that Cassatt produced some of her most innovative—and now celebrated—compositions." -The Art Institute of Chicago

Jeff is co-owner of Art Excursions, Inc, a business offering private guiding, educational programs and small group tours. Jeff has also taught on the university level for many years.

ON THE SAME PAGE: The Seasons of Birds in DuPage County.

Dr. Mike Warner from the DuPage Birding Club will present "The Seasons of Birds in DuPage County" as part of the library's discussion of our On the Same Page book by Margaret Renkl, The Comfort of Crows: A Backyard Year. He will cover the basics of getting started in birding and then focus on which types of birds can be found in different habitats over the course of the year's four seasons. His presentation will conclude on some of the threats to bird populations and what we can do to prevent the decline in the number of birds. Please join us for an informative and entertaining presentation about birds you can find in and around Bloomingdale.

Dr. Warner has led numerous Field Trips for groups in search of birds in our local Forest Preserves and parks. Mike is also an avid bird photographer and his presentation will include many of his photographs.
