Event Details
Initially leading 131 miles from Cumberland, MD to the Ohio River at Wheeling, VA/WV, the Cumberland Road was eventually extended another 475 miles across Ohio and Indiana to Vandalia, Illinois. As the first wagon road leading over the Allegheny Mountains, it became a heavily-used route for commerce and settlement, as well as a vital unifying link between the eastern seaboard and the emerging states west of the mountains. This presentation explores the original route to Wheeling on foot, and shows the way from there to Vandalia.
Travel program hosted by outdoor enthusiast John Lynn.
